From something that was a thought on the drawing board
back in October to having fun with 60 others with in 5 weeks, that is
what we did. We took the ball and ran with it. While some club members
were cautious the proverb "lead by example came into play".
Pete borrowed the tractor & slasher from our neighbouring motor
cross club and ploughed through the area of our grounds we had set
aside for this new field course. With all the rain we had during winter
the bracken was 4-5 ft high. The gum trees, very lush with new growth
and many of the Target butts we had placed out there had been devoured
by this vegetation. Within hours Peter had created a new course.
Over the next few weekends working bees included new directional
signs, new shooting pegs spray painted. Target faces glued, whipper
snipping, mowing, cleaning, chain sawing, general repairs & maintenance
around the club. The final task was driving up to Diamond Valley Archers
in Yarrambat about 2 or so hours north of our club to collect the
3D Animal Targets. DVA generously allowed us to use their 3Dtargets
for our 1st shoot.
This shoot was a combination of 2 x 10 3D animal targets on the newly
completed orange course and 2 x 10 3DAAA paper Targets on the revamped
red course which is home to our awesome tree stand. Flyers were sent
via email & snail mail to all archery clubs here in Victoria both
AV/AA & ABA. The feedback was fantastic lots of phone calls. We
knew other clubs were watching what we were doing.
The days drew closer to our shoot and Terry informed us that Al &
Rob were heading down to assist us. WOW this is amazing this support
blew us away. Their guidance would be valuable especially with the
definitions of divisions. Archery Forum on the internet was on fire
and the enthusiasm was infectious.
The atmosphere was buzzing and canteen was starting to rock The 2
courses were set & given the okay & stamp of approval by Al
& Rob .We were ready to go. On the Saturday quite a few clubs
arrived to camp over on our club camping grounds and to have a shoot
on the Blue field course. Many of the archers came from AV/AA clubs
and shooting an unmarked distance round was a new game for them. We
had 30 for our BBQ dinner & camp over. This was so good The weather
was wonderful and the comment WOW you have hot showers, brought smiles
to our faces.
Sunday came, cars rolled in and 50 archers ready to get out there
and experience the 3DAAA game. This was a brilliant turn up considering
there were 2 other non-calendar archery events that were happening
on this weekend as well. Pete welcomed everyone an Al & Rob explained
how 3DAAA worked the only difference in this format was we had a muster
and starting time so we could explain how to score and clarify divisions
and the rules of the game. Rob was going to wander around the course
to answer any questions archers may have. Al joined in Pete's group
and off they all headed onto the New Orange 3DAAA field course. With
a horn blow the game started and many arrows were shoot towards rubber
for the 1st round. From there on end a great time was had by all.
After a couple of hours in wandered some archers hungry for lunch
and ready to hit the Red course to have a go at the 3DAAA paper round,
another new game.
The 3DAAA paper round was also received with huge enthusiasm and everyone
came back with smiles on their faces saying wow that was great!
Quite a few 3DAAA membership forms were taken and the interest was
enormous.
At least 4 of the clubs who attended were interested in this new game
and how to join. The club was buzzing as archers chattered amongst
themselves and laughter echoed.
All the hard work was certainly worth it and thanks you to all our
MPB Inc members who jumped in and gave the club their support, energy
& time to make this shoot a success. Thanks to DVA for their ongoing
support and again a big Thanks to Terry, Al, Rob & Jane for your
guidance, advice & support.
It was a great weekend and from all reports everyone had a ball and
eager to do it again. Hopefully we shall have the Victorian southern
series up and running hence in the near future when more Victorian
clubs join in this fun game. We shall be doing it all again in April
2004 over the Easter weekend so we hope to meet more 3DAAA players.
